After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Bleeding

A certain amount of bleeding is to be expected following surgery.  Bleeding is best managed with pressure.  You must place two 2×2 gauze packs into the area of the extraction and apply firm pressure for 30 minutes.  If necessary, replace the gauze every 30 minutes until the bleeding has stopped.  You can expect a slight amount of blood during the first 1-2 days.  You must not rinse or spit for the first 24 hours or you will injure the clot and cause are area to continue to bleed.

Swelling

Swelling is a normal response following surgery, but can be partially avoided by placing an ice pack for the first 24 hours after surgery.  You should put it on for 20 minutes and take it off for 20 minutes.  Maximum swelling usually occurs on the third day after surgery.  It is important to stretch you jaw for a few days to reduce stiffness.

Pain

Use the prescribed medication given to you for pain. Avoid aspirin in the first 24 hours after surgery.  Pain medication is used to make you comfortable and to raise your pain tolerance level.  It will not make pain disappear.

Diet

Start with clear liquids (Gatorade, water, popsicles, jello, apple juice, soda, etc.). If you tolerate two quarts of clear liquids, you may advance to soft foods, i.e. macaroni and cheese, scrambled eggs, pasta, soup and fish .

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea can be caused by the pain medication.  If nausea or vomiting continues, discontinue or reduce the narcotic prescription.  Symptoms should be alleviated within 24 hours.

After Surgery

If you had IV sedation, you cannot drive for the remainder of the day.

After the first post-operative day, rinse with warm water and/or Peridex after meals to flush out particles of food and debris which may lodge in the operative site.

Do Not Smoke for the first 3 days after surgery.  Avoid smoking for a week or forever if possible.

You must return for observation and/or suture removal within 7 days.  The dissolvable sutures may begin to fall out prior to your follow-up appointment.  This is normal.
